A mental health in custody assessment identifies psychiatric disorders among the prison population and evaluates the impact of the carceral environment on a prisoner’s wellbeing. These reports are used to secure appropriate clinical pathways, diversion to hospital, or specialized treatment within the prison estate.

When this report is required
- To assess if a prisoner meets the criteria for transfer to a secure hospital under Section 47/49
- To evaluate the risk of self-harm or suicide (ACDT) and the adequacy of current monitoring
- To determine if a prisoner’s mental state is a barrier to participating in offending behaviour programmes
- To provide clinical evidence for “reasonable adjustments” in accordance with the Equality Act
